Macadamia Nuts: A Snack That Can Cause Neurological Issues

Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin that can cause significant illness in dogs. While rarely fatal, the symptoms can be severe and distressing. Even a small quantity of these nuts can be enough to cause a reaction. The high-fat content also poses a risk of pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas that can have serious health consequences. Clinical signs usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and primarily affect the nervous and muscular systems. Symptoms include profound weakness (especially in the hind legs), lethargy, vomiting, tremors, and an elevated body temperature (hyperthermia). Dogs may appear wobbly, unable to stand, or in pain. Although most dogs recover within 48 hours, it is always best to contact a veterinarian. Supportive care can help manage the symptoms and keep the dog comfortable during recovery.
